Our Mission

Medical Services

Lamu Center of Preventative Health provides free, high-quality healthcare to underserved communities in Lamu County, Kenya. Our medical clinic and laboratory operate six days a week, delivering comprehensive primary care, preventive services, chronic disease management, maternal and child health, laboratory testing, and health education.

In 2025, we provided a record 11,798 patient visits, reflecting the growing need for accessible healthcare in our community. This year, we are averaging approximately 45 patient visits each day, demonstrating the continued growth in demand for our services. Through the dedication of our local staff, volunteers, and supporters, we are expanding access to compassionate, culturally responsive healthcare and improving the lives of individuals and families across Lamu County.

Eye Care Program

The Lamu Center of Preventative Health (LCPH) is committed to restoring sight and preventing avoidable blindness through free community eye care services. Every two to three years, our volunteer eye clinics bring together local and international eye care professionals to provide comprehensive eye examinations, glaucoma screening, vision screening, evaluation and treatment of common eye diseases, and free prescription and reading eyeglasses.

Our most recent Eye Care Outreach Clinic, held in July 2026, provided care to 550 patients from Lamu County and the surrounding communities. During the clinic, our volunteer team distributed more than 1,200 pairs of prescription and reading glasses, performed glaucoma screenings, and identified patients with cataracts, glaucoma, diabetic eye disease, and other vision-threatening conditions requiring ongoing care.

This successful outreach was made possible through the dedication of our volunteer providers and support staff, as well as the generous donation of eyeglasses from the Lions Club of Canada, helping restore sight and improve the quality of life for hundreds of patients who otherwise would have limited access to vision care.

Through these recurring outreach clinics, LCPH continues its mission of expanding access to eye care, preventing blindness, and improving the health and well-being of the people of Lamu.

Dental Health Services

Expanding access to quality dental care has long been a priority for the Lamu Center of Preventative Health (LCPH). While comprehensive dental services are not yet available at our center, we are actively working to make this vision a reality.

A major milestone was reached on July 30, 2026, when our container of donated dental equipment successfully arrived in Lamu. We are now preparing the clinic space, installing the equipment, and training a local dental assistant to help build a sustainable, community-based dental program that will serve the people of Lamu for years to come.

This initiative has been made possible through the extraordinary generosity and dedication of Dr. Rick Davidson, Hank Campbell, Illinois State University student volunteers, and Drake Zimmerman, along with the support of many donors and friends of LCPH. Their partnership is helping lay the foundation for a program that will significantly expand access to essential dental care for the Lamu community.

We look forward to sharing updates as we continue working toward opening our dental clinic and making high-quality, affordable dental care a lasting reality for the people of Lamu.

Growing Health, Preserving Tradition

As part of our commitment to preventive healthcare and community wellness, LCPH is developing a Medicinal Garden behind our clinic. The garden features native plants and herbs traditionally used by the local community to help manage common illnesses and symptoms.

Our goal is to preserve this valuable indigenous knowledge while providing sustainable access to medicinal plants for education, research, and community health. By cultivating these locally recognized herbs, we hope to promote preventive care and support healthier lives through culturally relevant, natural remedies.

This initiative has been made possible through the collaboration of Jim Simeone and his students at the Peace Garden at Illinois Wesleyan University, whose partnership with the Lamu community has helped bring this project to life. Together, we are creating a living resource that celebrates traditional healing practices while strengthening community health for future generations.
